What day trips can you do in Tasmania?

Thirteen, and every one picks you up from your accommodation. From Hobart you can reach Bruny Island, Port Arthur, Wineglass Bay, Maria Island and even Cradle Mountain in a day. From Launceston, Cradle Mountain is closer and cheaper. From $137.

Checked on 5 October 2026.

Tasmania is the one state where almost everything is a day trip, because nothing is more than a few hours from somewhere you can sleep. That makes it the easiest place in Australia to travel without a car, and the cheapest to see properly.

The three people ask about most

  • Bruny Island — yes, it does in a day. The ferry is included both ways and pick-up is from about 6:50am, which is what makes a full day on the island possible.
  • Port Arthur — three versions: straight, with a lavender farm, or with a Tasmanian devil sanctuary. The devil one is the pick if you are travelling with children.
  • Cradle Mountain — doable from Hobart as a 6am start in an 11-seat bus, or far more easily from Launceston at $169.

Stacking them, or not

  • Two or three day trips from Hobart works well and keeps you in one bed.
  • More than three and a multi-day loop is better value — it stops you driving the same road out and back each morning.
  • Every trip includes accommodation transfers, so where you stay does not change the price.
