Is Sydney good for solo travellers, families and older visitors?

Yes to all three, and it is the easiest place in the country to begin. Most people arrive here, and the two things worth leaving the city for — the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley — are both day trips that pick you up and drop you back, from $139, so you need no car and no plan. If Sydney is the start of something longer, the east coast run to Cairns leaves from here and takes 14 to 32 days with the buses and nights booked before you travel.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Sydney is where most trips to Australia start, and it is a forgiving place to land. Everything runs on public transport, the day trips collect you from your accommodation, and you are never far from someone else doing exactly the same thing.

If you are travelling solo

  • The day trips are small groupscapped at 24, moving together all day. They are the easiest way to meet people in your first week without having to try.
  • Pick-up and drop-off are includedso you are not finding a station at 6am in a city you landed in yesterday.
  • It is the start of the east coast runwhere everyone around you is also travelling alone. There is more on that on our east coast solo page.
  • Stick to the swimming flagsat Bondi, Manly and Coogee. The flags are the whole safety system and the beaches are patrolled.

If you are bringing children

  • The Blue Mountains day is the onea train ride, cable cars over the valley and the Three Sisters, all in a day and back by evening.
  • No drivingwhich on the first jetlagged days matters more than anything.
  • Ferries count as sightseeing. The Manly ferry is a normal public service and one of the best harbour trips you will take.
  • The Hunter Valley is a wine dayso leave that one for the adults.

If you are an older visitor

Both the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley trips are rated 3 out of 5 for effort and 3 for comfort — coach travel, short walks at each stop, and nothing that demands a scramble. The Blue Mountains walking is as much or as little as you want, because the cable cars cover the descent.

Going further than Sydney

Sydney is one end of the east coast. The run north to Cairns takes in Byron Bay, K'gari, the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef, with the bus passes booked for you before you travel and the nights arranged. Fourteen days does it; longer versions stop for longer.

Coming the other way

If you are flying into Cairns and finishing in Sydney, the same run works in reverse at the same price. Which direction suits you depends mostly on the month — there is a full answer on our east coast up or down page.

How long to give Sydney itself

Three days. One for the harbour, the bridge and the beaches, one for the Blue Mountains, and one spare for whatever you liked most. If you are working out how Sydney fits into a bigger trip, our how many days do you need in Australia page does the arithmetic.
