Should you travel the east coast of Australia up or down?

Let the month decide, not the map. Going south to north (Sydney up to Cairns) works beautifully from April to September — you finish in the tropics in their dry season, when Cairns gets 26 to 33mm of rain a month instead of 400. Going north to south suits October to March, so you leave the wet north early and arrive into a Sydney summer. We sell the run in both directions at the same price, so there is nothing riding on which you pick.

People agonise over this one and it comes down to a single thing: the north and the south have opposite best seasons. Get the direction right and you follow the good weather the whole way instead of chasing it.

Look at the Cairns row again. August averages 26mm of rain. February averages 438mm. That is the entire argument, and it is why the direction question is really a timing question.

Going up: Sydney to Cairns

Best from April to September

  • You finish in the tropics in the dry season — the best stretch of the whole trip saved for last.
  • The reef and the Whitsundays are at their calmest and clearest in these months.
  • You start in a mild Sydney and get steadily warmer, which is a lovely way to travel.
  • Most people fly home out of Cairns, and it is a straightforward international connection.

Going down: Cairns to Sydney or Brisbane

Best from October to March

  • You get the tropics done before the heavy rain builds, then move south into a proper Australian summer.
  • Sydney, Byron and the Gold Coast are at their best in exactly these months.
  • If you are carrying on to Melbourne or Tasmania afterwards, this is the direction that sets it up.
  • Flights into Cairns from Asia are often the cheaper way into the country.

What does not change

  • The stops are the same both waysK'gari, the Whitsundays, the reef, Byron.
  • The price is the samedirection for direction and day for day.
  • The bus passes are booked for you before you travelwhichever way you are heading.
  • Both directions run year round. There is no month the trip stops.
