Is the east coast of Australia good for travelling solo?

It is probably the easiest long trip in the world to do on your own. The whole east coast runs on backpacker infrastructure — hostels in every town, buses between them, and day trips that are mostly other people travelling alone. On our trips the bus passes are booked for you before you leave home, so you are never standing at a counter in Airlie Beach trying to get a seat north. And the three big days — K'gari, the Whitsundays sail and the reef — all put you on a small boat or a 4WD with the same group for a day or more, which is where people end up travelling on together.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Of all the questions we get asked, this is the one where the honest answer is the most reassuring: almost everyone on the east coast is doing it alone. You will not be the odd one out — you will be the normal one.

Why it works so well on your own

  • The route is a conveyor belt.Everyone is going the same way, at roughly the same pace, so you keep running into the same faces three towns later.
  • The big days are shared. Two or three nights on a sailing boat with 12 people, or a 4WD on K'gari — you finish those knowing everyone on board.
  • Hostels are the defaultnot a budget compromise, so there is no single supplement and no eating dinner alone unless you want to.
  • Nothing is left to arrange on the day.The bus passes and the nights are booked before you travel.

What is actually booked for you

The overnight bus nights are deliberate — they cover a long leg and save you a night's accommodation.

Sensible, not scary

  • Stick to the swimming flags.Australian beaches are patrolled where it matters, and the flags are the whole safety system.
  • In the tropical north, swim where you are told. From November to May there are marine stingers on the Queensland coast — the reef boats carry suits and the beaches have netted enclosures.
  • Do not swim in rivers or estuaries north of Rockhampton. That is crocodile country and the signs mean it.
  • Book the big days ahead in December and January. Not for safety — they simply sell out.

Which trip suits a solo traveller best?

The ones with nights on the boat and camping on K'gari, because shared nights are what turn a group of strangers into people you travel on with. The 7 day run is all hostels; the 10 and 14 day versions add two nights camping on K'gari and a night on the sailing boat.

Prefer a smaller group?

The Whitsundays sailing boats range from 12 people to 54. If the idea of a big lively boat is not you, the small ones are the same islands and the same beach with a tenth of the crowd.
