Best time to visit Strahan

December to MarchSummer for the warmest, driest days; winter for the rainforest at its greenest.

December to March for the warmest and driest days. At Strahan Aerodrome, January and February average 21°C by day, and February is the driest month of the year at 70mm. The west coast is Tasmania's rainforest country, and May to September is when it is at its wettest and greenest, with 147 to 180mm a month, while days stay at 12 to 15°C, as mild as Hobart's. Our five day loop spends two nights at Strahan, from $939, and the Gordon River cruise with lunch on board is on the six day trip, from $1,999.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

Strahan sits on Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's west coast, the gateway to the Gordon River and the Franklin wilderness. The rain is what makes this coast: it grows the cool temperate rainforest and stains the river the colour of tea. Summer brings the warmest, driest days; the rest of the year brings the rainforest at full strength.
