Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay for K'gari (Fraser Island)?

Rainbow Beach, for most people — and there is a third option. Rainbow Beach is the smaller, quieter town and closer to the southern ferry crossing at Inskip Point, which means less of your day spent getting to the island. Hervey Bay is bigger, has far more accommodation, and is the whale watching town between roughly July and November. The option people miss: several trips leave from Noosa, which is a far nicer place to spend the nights either side. From $299.

K'gari has two mainland gateways and they are an hour and a half apart. Which one you pick changes the day more than people expect, because the ferry crossings are at opposite ends of the island.

If you're travelling the east coast anyway

You may not need to choose. On the Brisbane to Cairns runs, K'gari is a scheduled stop with the ferry, the 4WD and the nights already booked — and the itinerary picks the gateway for you. Rainbow Beach appears on several of them as an overnight town in its own right.

One thing worth knowing

You cannot take a normal hire car to the island from either town. K'gari has no sealed roads and standard hire agreements exclude it, so the gateway question is only about where you sleep and how far you travel to the ferry — not about whether you can drive across.
