Do you need a 4WD in Australia, or is a trip easier?
Most of Australia is sealed road and a normal hire car is fine. The highways down the east coast, the Great Ocean Road, the run to Uluru and nearly all of Tasmania need nothing special. Four places genuinely do need a four wheel drive: K'gari, the Gibb River Road, Karijini and the tracks in the Top End. On those, the vehicle is the trip — our K'gari runs are tag-along convoys in automatic 4WDs, and the Kimberley crossing covers 600km of the Gibb River Road with river fords including the Pentecost.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
This comes up constantly, and the honest answer is that most people are talked into more vehicle than they need — and then get caught out by the handful of places where it actually matters.
Where a normal hire car is completely fine
- The whole east coast.Sydney to Cairns is sealed highway the entire way.
- The Great Ocean Roadand the Victorian coast.
- Alice Springs to Uluru. The Stuart and Lasseter Highways are sealed — it is a 450km drive on good road.
- Tasmaniaapart from a few short gravel spurs to trailheads.
- Perth to Margaret River and down to Esperance.
Where you genuinely need four wheel drive
| Where | Why | What we run there |
|---|---|---|
| K'gari (Fraser Island) | The island has no sealed roads at all. You drive on sand tracks and on the beach itself, and the tides decide when you can move. | K'gari trips — guided 4WD buses, or tag-along convoys where you drive an automatic Toyota 4WD behind a guide |
| The Gibb River Road | 600km of unsealed road through the Kimberley with river crossings, including the Pentecost. It closes in the wet season. | Darwin to Broome — 10 days, with the Gibb River Road and its fords included |
| Karijini | Gorge country in the Pilbara, a long way from anywhere on unsealed approaches. | West Coast and Karijini — 10 days from Perth |
| Top End tracks | Kakadu's main road is sealed, but Jim Jim, Twin Falls and Koolpin Gorge are not, and some are permit-only. | Kakadu trips — run in Toyota 4WD Troopies |
The bit people forget when they price up driving
- One-way drop fees.Picking a car up in Sydney and leaving it in Cairns can cost more than the hire itself.
- Insurance excess on unsealed roads. Most standard hire agreements will not cover you off the bitumen at all, which is why so many K'gari plans fall over at the counter.
- Fuel across distance.Darwin to Broome is 1,900km. The fuel alone is a real number before you have slept anywhere.
- Single supplement on accommodationwhich a trip with shared rooms does not charge you.
Still want to drive it yourself?
Then take the tag-along. On our 3 day K'gari trip you drive an automatic Toyota 4WD in a convoy behind a guide, with the ferry transfers included — you get the driving without the permit, the tide tables or the recovery gear being your problem.

Where this comes from. The vehicle, the roads covered and the river crossings on each trip are that trip's own details as held on its page here. Road sealing and distances are the public road network. Prices update on their own from our booking system.
