Is Kangaroo Island good for families, older visitors and solo travellers?
All threeBut the day trip from Adelaide is a 16 hour day — worth knowing first.
All three, with one caveat worth reading first: the day trip from Adelaide is a 16 hour day. That is a 6:30am pick-up and a late return, with a 45 minute ferry each way. It is rated 2 out of 5 for effort and comfort 4 — the walking is gentle, the length is the hard part. The island itself suits everyone: Seal Bay is a ranger-guided beach walk among around 800 endangered Australian sea lions, which is not something you see anywhere else. From $195 if you are already on the island; $399 as a full day from Adelaide.

Kangaroo Island is the best wildlife day in southern Australia, and the thing to get right is not which trip but how you reach it — because a day from Adelaide and a day from the island are very different propositions.
The 16 hour day
- Pick-up from Adelaide hotels is between 6:30 and 6:45am.The ferry leaves from Cape Jervis and takes 45 minutes.
- The return ferry leaves Penneshaw in the eveningso you are back in Adelaide late.
- You do get time to rest on the coachand the guide does the driving — but it is a long day for small children and anyone who does not travel well.
- If you are already on the islandthe same day starts at 9am and costs $195 instead of $399.

If you are bringing children
The wildlife is the draw and it delivers — Seal Bay is a guided walk on the beach among the sea lions, not a viewing platform. But weigh the 16 hour day honestly. Staying a night on the island and doing the $195 day turns it from an endurance test into a holiday, and the 2 day camping trip at $869 includes a night glamping at Eleanor Downs Farm with a barbecue dinner in the old shearing shed.
If you are an older visitor
The Food and Wine day at $195 is the pick — effort 2, a two course lunch at the Emu Ridge distillery, tastings through the day, and the Raptor Domain free flight birds of prey presentation. The full island day is also effort 2 with comfort 4, so it is a coach and short walks rather than anything demanding.
If you are travelling solo
- The camping trips cap at 20and you sleep in swags under the stars at a private property with its own beach access.
- Three days gives you the whole islandSeal Bay, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and Flinders Chase.
- The coach days carry up to 48which is sociable without committing you to anyone.
- Adelaide is a cheap baseand Kangaroo Island is the main reason to be there.
One day or three?
One day covers Seal Bay and the south coast. Three days covers the island — the two nights are at a private property called Happiness with its own access to Antechamber Bay, and you are not watching the clock for a ferry. If you only have a day and you are coming from Adelaide, know what you are signing up for and take it anyway; it is worth the hours.
