Where do you sleep on a Great Ocean Road or Grampians trip?

Both existDorm share on the cheapest, private ensuite on the rest.

It depends on the trip, and the difference is worth knowing before you book. The cheapest — the 2 Day Great Ocean Road at $369 — is one night at Apollo Bay in hostel and cabin accommodation, and the rooms are dorm share. The Grampians trips put you at Halls Gap, where you choose between a private ensuite room at the Gariwerd Motel or shared accommodation. The three day trips add a night at Warrnambool in private ensuite rooms or triple share. Every one of them includes the night; what varies is whether you have your own door.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The night is included on every multi-day trip from Melbourne. What it is varies more than the price gap suggests, and it is the detail people most often discover after booking.

Read the middle column. "Dorm share" and "private ensuite room" are both in here, and they are not the same holiday.

The short version

  • Apollo Bay, on the 2 day Great Ocean Roadhostel and cabin accommodation, rooms are dorm share. This is the $369 trip and the price reflects it.
  • Halls Gap, in the Grampiansa private ensuite room at the Gariwerd Motel, or shared accommodation with a shared bathroom. You choose.
  • Warrnambool, on the three day tripsthe Downtown Motel, private ensuite rooms or triple share with a shared bathroom.
  • On the 21 day Melbourne to Cairns runit is hostels the whole way, plus two nights camping on K'gari and two in a shared cabin on the sailing boat.

If you want your own room

Take a Grampians trip rather than the cheapest coast trip. The 2 and 3 day Grampians itineraries offer a private ensuite at Halls Gap as an option; the $369 Great Ocean Road trip does not — it is dorm share at Apollo Bay and that is the trip. If a private room matters to you, that single detail should decide which one you book.

What about meals?

Largely not included on these. The day trips include lunch on some itineraries and nothing on others, and on the two and three day trips you are buying your own in Apollo Bay, Halls Gap or Warrnambool. Halls Gap in particular is a small town, so eat when the options are open rather than late.

Or do it in a day

If the accommodation question is the sticking point, the Great Ocean Road also works as a day trip from $139 — a long day, but you sleep in your own Melbourne hotel at the end of it. There is more on which day out suits whom on our who Melbourne suits page.
