Can you visit the Great Barrier Reef in winter?
Yes, the dry season26°C days in Cairns, dry skies and the outer reef from $215.
Yes. Winter is the dry season on the Great Barrier Reef, and the reef boats run right through it. Cairns averages 26°C by day in June and July, with 33mm of rain in July against 405mm in January, and August is the driest month of the year at 27mm. June to August also sits outside the stinger months, roughly November to May, when stinger suits are carried. The outer reef is about an hour and a half out of Cairns: a sailing catamaran capped at 20 is from $215, and around five hours in the water across two outer reef sites is from $239. In the Whitsundays, July averages 22°C, ideal sailing weather, and a day sail with snorkelling is $199, children $150.

Australia's winter is the tropics' dry season. While Sydney and Melbourne are in jackets, the reef coast is warm, dry and at its calmest, which makes June to August peak season on the reef. The reef days run from both Cairns and Airlie Beach.
