Is the Great Barrier Reef in Brisbane?

No, further northThe reef boats leave from Cairns and Airlie Beach. Brisbane is where the road there starts.

No. The Great Barrier Reef is off the Queensland coast further north, and the boats out to it leave from Cairns and Airlie Beach, not Brisbane. Brisbane is where the east coast run north begins. That is the easy way to reach the reef from here: the 7 day Brisbane to Cairns trip, from $1,449, takes in K'gari and a sail in the Whitsundays on the way, and includes a reef day out of Cairns, with the bus passes booked for you. If you fly north instead, a reef day from Cairns is from $239 for around five hours in the water.

It is an easy mix-up: Brisbane is Queensland's capital and the reef is Queensland's most famous sight. But the reef runs 2,300km up the coast, and the towns the reef boats go out from are Cairns, for the outer reef, and Airlie Beach, for the Whitsunday islands and their fringing reef. Brisbane is the start of the road north to both.

From Brisbane to the reef, the easy way

Every one of these starts in Brisbane, works up the coast with the bus passes booked before you travel, sails the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach and finishes in Cairns, with a day on the reef out of Cairns, lunch included on all but the 21 day trip.
