Can you do the Flinders Ranges as a day trip from Adelaide?

Not reallyWilpena Pound is five hours each way. Give it two nights.

No, not sensibly. Wilpena Pound — the natural amphitheatre most people mean by the Flinders Ranges — is around 450km north of Adelaide, which is about five hours' driving each way. A day trip would be ten hours in the car for an hour on the ground. Give it two nights minimum. If you have a single day out of Adelaide, Kangaroo Island or the Barossa are the ones that genuinely fit. If you are heading north anyway, the Adelaide to Uluru runs go through that country, from $1,039 for five days.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The Flinders Ranges look close to Adelaide on a map of South Australia. They are not, and the state's scale is the thing that catches people out — Adelaide sits in the bottom corner of somewhere very large.

Heading north instead

If the Flinders are on your list because you want the outback rather than that specific park, the 7 day Adelaide to Uluru run actually camps at Wilpena Pound — a swag night inside the Flinders — then goes on through Warren Gorge, a night in an underground bunkhouse at Coober Pedy, Kings Creek Station and two nights at Uluru. From $1,305. That is the only way we sell the Flinders, and it is a better one than a day trip was ever going to be.

Driving yourself to the Flinders

  • Sealed road as far as Wilpenaso a normal hire car gets you there.
  • Fuel is a long way apartonce you are past Port Augusta. Fill up when you can rather than when you need to.
  • Mobile coverage is patchythrough the ranges.
  • Book accommodation ahead in springwhich is both the best time and the busiest.
  • Watch for kangaroos at dawn and duskthis is the part of South Australia where that advice is not a formality.
