Is Cradle Mountain good for solo hikers, families and older visitors?

All threeThe famous walk is flat boardwalk. The hard one is optional.

All three, and more easily than its reputation suggests. Every Cradle Mountain trip we sell is rated 2 out of 5 for effort, because the walk everyone comes for — the Dove Lake circuit, about 6km — is flat and mostly boardwalk, right under the mountain. The hard version is a separate decision you make on the day: the summit is a steep boulder scramble and the Overland Track is six days. Neither is on a day trip. From $169 out of Launceston.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Cradle Mountain looks like a serious mountain and people assume seeing it is a serious undertaking. It is not, unless you choose for it to be — and that choice happens at the car park, not at the booking stage.

The three levels, and which trips include which

WalkWhat it isOn a day trip?
Dove Lake circuitAbout 6km, flat, mostly boardwalk, right beneath the mountain. Around two hours.Yes. This is what the day trips do
Shorter loopsEnchanted Walk, Pencil Pine Falls, Weindorfers Forest — 20 to 40 minutes each, sheltered rainforest.Yes — and the ones to take in bad weather
Marions LookoutA steep climb off the Dove Lake track with chains near the top.Only if you choose it and have the time
The summitA boulder scramble, a full day, weather dependent. No — needs a night there
The Overland TrackSix days to Lake St Clair, with booked huts.No — a different trip entirely

If you are a solo walker

  • The day trips drop you and collect youso you walk alone without organising transport — which is the hard part of Cradle Mountain, not the walking.
  • Stay a nightif you want the summit or Marions Lookout. The day trips do not allow the time.
  • Groups are smallmostly 20 or fewer, so you are not herded.
  • The shuttle inside the parkruns between the visitor centre and Dove Lake, so you can mix and match walks once you are in.

If you are bringing children

The Dove Lake circuit works — flat boardwalk, two hours, and wombats around Ronny Creek that are genuinely easy to spot. The shorter rainforest loops are 20 to 40 minutes if two hours is too much. The thing to plan for is cold rather than distance: the highlands average 6°C in July and 19°C in January, and the weather turns fast in any month.

If you are an older visitor

Effort 2 out of 5 across every trip. The boardwalk is the whole point of why this works — you are on a flat surface the entire way round with the mountain above you. The day trip from Launceston at $169 is far shorter than the one from Hobart at $260, which matters more than the money.

The one thing to plan around

Cloud. The mountain is in it often, and a day trip gives you one attempt. A night there gives you two mornings. August is the wettest month at 122mm, and the Dove Lake boardwalk is beautiful in mist anyway. There is a month-by-month on our best time to visit Cradle Mountain page, and more on whether four days is too many on is Cradle Mountain worth it.
