What is there to do in Brisbane, and is it worth stopping?

Two daysIt is a gateway more than a destination, and that is fine.

Two days, and be honest with yourself that it is a gateway. Brisbane is a pleasant river city with good weather — 30°C in January, 22°C in July, and the driest months are August and September at around 30mm — and about two days of things to see. The reason most people are there is that it is where the east coast run north begins: K'gari, the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef in seven days from $1,449, with the buses and nights booked before you travel.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

We sell trips out of Brisbane and none inside it, which tells you something. It is a good city and a short stop, and the useful thing is knowing what is genuinely within reach.

Two days in the city

  • South Banka man-made lagoon beach on the river, free to swim in, with the galleries and museums behind it.
  • The Story Bridge climbor the free walk across it for the same view from underneath.
  • Mount Coot-tha lookoutfor the city and the ranges behind it.
  • The CityCatthe river ferry is normal public transport and the cheapest sightseeing in town.
  • Lone Pinethe koala sanctuary, reachable by river cruise.

The weather, which is the city's best argument

What is an hour away

  • The Gold Coastabout an hour south — the beaches and the theme parks.
  • Byron Baya little over two hours south, which is worth two nights rather than a day. See can you do Byron as a day trip.
  • The Sunshine Coast and Noosaabout 90 minutes north.
  • Moreton and North Stradbrokethe sand islands in the bay.

The real reason to be here

Brisbane is the southern end of the run north. Seven days takes in K'gari, the Whitsundays and the reef; ten does the same at a pace where you stop properly; fourteen adds two nights camping on K'gari and a night on the sailing boat. The bus passes are booked for you before you travel, so Brisbane is where it all starts rather than where you plan it.
