Can you do Byron Bay as a day trip?
Only justFrom the Gold Coast it works. From Sydney it does not.
From the Gold Coast, yes — it is about an hour. From Brisbane it is a long day at around two and a half hours each way. From Sydney, no: it is roughly 760km and nine hours of driving. And the honest answer is that a day trip misses the point. The two things people come for — the sunrise walk to the Cape Byron lighthouse and getting on the water — both want a morning you are not driving through. Two nights with the activities booked is $369.

What you miss by not staying
- The lighthouse at sunrise.Cape Byron is the most easterly point of mainland Australia, so it gets the country's first light. That is a dawn walk, not a midday one.
- Getting on the water.Kayaks off Clarkes Beach and snorkel trips at The Pass both run in the morning, and the times move with the tide.
- Whale watchingroughly June to November, which is a four hour trip on its own.
- The evening.Byron after the day-trippers leave is a different and better town.

If you only have the one day
Then come from the Gold Coast or Ballina, start early, and give the morning to the lighthouse walk and Wategos Beach. Skip the drive back in the dark by making it a night — the difference in cost is small and the difference in the day is not.
Passing through on the east coast
Most people reach Byron on the run between Sydney and Cairns rather than as a trip of its own. On those, it is a scheduled stop with the bus and the nights already booked.
