Is Alice Springs and the Red Centre right for families, solo travellers and older visitors?

All three, and the thing that decides it is not age — it is where you want to sleep. Every Red Centre trip we sell is rated 1 to 5 for effort and for comfort, and they run from a bush swag under the stars to a furnished safari tent with twin beds, hot showers and power. Groups are capped at 21. The walking is the same either way — Uluru's base walk is flat, Kings Canyon has a steep start then levels out — so pick on the nights, not the days. From $535.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

People ask this expecting to be told the Red Centre is only for twenty-year-olds with a backpack. It is not. What actually varies between these trips is the bed, and that is a choice you make, not something your age decides for you.

The three kinds of night

  • Bush swaga canvas bedroll under the stars, mattress and linen provided. Easily the best night's sleep of the trip if you are up for it, and the cheapest.
  • Furnished safari tenta permanent tent with twin beds, on a powered camp with hot showers, flushing toilets and somewhere to charge a phone.
  • Campground with facilitiescommunal bathrooms, hot showers, and the option of a swag or a tent with beds.
  • Every one of them has hot showers.Nothing we sell in the Red Centre is roughing it without a bathroom.

If you are travelling solo

  • These are small group tripscapped at 21, moving together for the whole trip. You are not finding your own way anywhere.
  • Pick-up and drop-off are at your accommodationin Alice Springs, or at Yulara if you fly straight to the rock.
  • Most trips can start or finish at either endso a one-way works and you need not double back.
  • Shared camping means shared meals and shared eveningswhich is why solo travellers tend to book the camping options rather than avoid them.

If you are bringing children

The safari tent trips are the easy answer — twin beds, a bathroom block and power, and a comfort rating of 3 or 4. The swag trips are a brilliant night for older children and a long one for small ones. The walking is manageable either way; it is the heat that matters more, so look at April to September rather than midsummer.

If you are older, or not a camper

Go for comfort 4, or take a shorter trip. The 4 Day Uluru and West MacDonnell Ranges is the most comfortable of the set. If camping is a hard no, the 2 day trip lets you choose a twin-share safari tent with beds rather than a swag, and gets you Uluru at sunset and sunrise plus Kata Tjuta, which is the core of it.

What the walking is actually like

  • Uluru base walk10km, flat, and you can do as much or as little of it as you like.
  • Kata Tjuta, Walpa Gorgeshort and rocky underfoot.
  • Kings Canyon rim walkstarts with a steep climb of about 500 steps, then it is level. There is a shorter creek walk for anyone giving the rim a miss.
  • Everything is earlier in summer.Walks close in the heat of the day, which is why the trips start before dawn.
