Coober Pedy Tours

Famous around the world, Coober Pedy is well know for being an underground town and the world capital for Opal. Originally a Opal mine, many of the vacant shafts and holes used for prospecting have been turned into housing for locals who want to escape the bristering heat of the region.

The name 'Coober Pedy' comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means 'whitemans hole'. Its remote location which is situated roughly halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs, that has become a popular stopover point and tourist destination, especially since the completion of the sealing of the Stuart Highway in 1987.

Interesting attractions in Coober Pedy include the mines, the graveyard, and the underground churches. The first tree ever seen in the town was welded together from scrap iron which sits on a hilltop overlooking the town.
