Can you do the West MacDonnell Ranges as a day trip from Alice Springs?

PartlyThe near gorges fit a day. The best ones do not.

The near gorges fit a day; the ones worth the trip do not. Simpsons Gap is about 18km west of Alice Springs and Standley Chasm around 50km — both comfortably a half day. But Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen and the Ochre Pits sit 130km and more out, and strung along a single road that only goes one way. The 3 day camping trip at $535 covers both the East and West MacDonnells with all meals and the camping gear included, which is how most people see them properly.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The West MacDonnells run due west from Alice Springs as a single long ridge, with gorges and waterholes cut through it. The road follows the ridge rather than looping, so everything you add is distance you also have to drive back.

Why two or three days is the better answer

  • Ormiston Gorge is the one.A permanent waterhole under red walls, with a pound walk behind it, and it is the furthest out.
  • The light matters.Standley Chasm glows at midday, the gorges are best early and late — a day trip can only catch one of those.
  • The East MacDonnells are quieterEmily Gap with its Arrernte caterpillar Dreaming rock paintings, and Trephina Gorge — and almost nobody goes.
  • It is the start of the Larapinta Trailwhich runs 223km west along the ridge.
  • Swimming.Ellery Creek and Ormiston both have waterholes, and in the Red Centre that is not a small thing.

Driving it yourself

  • Sealed road most of the way.Namatjira Drive is sealed to Glen Helen and a normal hire car is fine.
  • Start early. The light is better and so is the temperature.
  • Take more water than you thinkespecially in the warm months.
  • There is no fuel past Glen Helenon that road.
  • Walks close in the heatin summer, same as at Uluru.

When to go

April to September. The gorges hold water year round but summer here means 36°C and walks closing at midday. There is a month-by-month on our best time to visit Alice Springs page, which also covers what else is within reach of the town.
