Is Sydney worth visiting?

Yes, and it is the one Australian city that lives up to the pictures. The harbour, the beaches and the coastal walks are all free and all walkable. Then the Blue Mountains are a day away at $139, and Sydney is the southern start of the east coast run to Cairns.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Sydney is the one that photographs well and holds up in person. Most of what makes it good costs nothing — the harbour, the beaches, the walk from Bondi to Coogee — which is unusual for a city this famous.

Why it is worth going

  • The harbour. The ferry to Manly costs the same as a bus and is one of the great city boat rides anywhere.
  • The beaches.Bondi, Bronte and Coogee in a row, with a clifftop walk joining them, all inside the city.
  • The Blue Mountainstwo hours west — the Three Sisters, escarpment walks and a valley the size of a county dropping away beneath you.
  • The Opera House and the bridgeare genuinely worth the look, and you can walk around both for free.
  • It works year round.Rain is spread evenly and the winter days are clear and mild. Month by month.

The honest version

  • It is expensivemore so than anywhere else in the country.
  • Three or four days is plentyfor the city and one day out.
  • The Blue Mountains is a ten-hour dayfrom Sydney and back — worth it, but not a half-day excursion.
  • Summer is hot, humid and busy.Spring and autumn are the better windows and the water is still swimmable in April.
