Sydney itinerary — three, five and seven days

Three daysHarbour, mountains, beaches. Five adds the wine, seven adds a trip.

Three days covers Sydney. One on the harbour, one in the Blue Mountains, one at the beaches. Five days adds the Hunter Valley and a slower pace. Seven is more than the city needs, and at that point you are better off spending the extra two days heading north. The two days out of the city both collect you from your hotel: the Blue Mountains from $139 and the Hunter Valley from $164.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Sydney is where most trips to Australia start, and most people give it too long or too little. Three days is the number. Here's what goes in each one.

Day one — the harbour, on foot

  • Circular Quay to the Opera Housethen round into the Botanic Gardens and out to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the view back.
  • The Rocksbehind the quay, with the markets at weekends.
  • Walk across the Harbour Bridge. The pedestrian path is free and the view is the one you paid for on the climb.
  • The Manly ferryin the afternoon. It is a normal public service and the best half hour in the city.
  • No car, no tour, no bookings. The whole day runs on a travel card.

Day two — the Blue Mountains

An hour and a half west of the city, and a complete change of scene. Sandstone cliffs, eucalypt valleys and the Three Sisters. The day trip picks you up from your accommodation and uses the cable cars at Scenic World, so you see the valley floor without walking back up out of it.

Rated 2 out of 5 for effort. Short walks to lookouts, with the cable cars covering the descent.

Day three — the beaches

  • Bondi to Coogeea coastal path of about 6km past Tamarama and Bronte. Two hours at a wander.
  • Manlyif you went to Bondi and want the quieter version, or the other way round.
  • Swim between the flags.Australian beaches are patrolled and the flags are the whole system.
  • Icebergs at Bondiis the ocean pool in every photograph of the beach.

Days four and five — wine, or slow down

The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region and a day out of Sydney, from $164. If wine is not your thing, the better use of a fourth day is to stop planning: the inner west, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, a second beach.

Six days and beyond — go north

Past five days the city starts repeating itself. If you have a week or more, the east coast run leaves from here and takes in Byron Bay, K'gari, the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Fourteen days gets you to Cairns with the bus passes and every night booked before you leave home.

A few practical things

  • You do not need a car.Trains, buses, ferries and light rail all take a contactless card, and both day trips collect you from your accommodation.
  • The airport train runs into the city in about 15 minutes.
  • Where you stay barely mattersbecause of that pick-up. There is more on the areas on our where to stay in Sydney page.
  • December to February is hot and busy.March, April, October and November are the better months.

If Sydney is one stop of several

Three days here, three in Melbourne, and a week on the east coast makes a sensible fortnight. Adding Uluru or Cairns to a short trip is where people come unstuck. There is a breakdown of the distances on our how many days do you need in Australia page.
