Where should you stay in Sydney?

The cityFor a first visit of three or four days. The beaches for longer.

The city, if it is your first visit and you have three or four days. Everything you came for is a walk or a short ferry from Circular Quay — the Opera House, the bridge, the Rocks and the Botanic Gardens. Bondi suits a longer stay, and Manly is the one locals would pick, because the ferry there is itself one of the best things to do in Sydney. The practical point: our day trips collect you from your accommodation wherever it is, so where you stay does not decide what you can do.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Sydney spreads a long way, and the honest answer depends almost entirely on how many nights you have. Three nights and you want to be central. Ten and you would be mad not to be near water.

The thing that makes the choice easier

The day trips pick up from your accommodation. The Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley days both collect you and bring you back, so you are not working out a 6am train from wherever you happen to be. That takes the pressure off the decision entirely — stay where you want to spend your evenings, not where you think the tours leave from.

Getting around once you are here

  • The ferries are public transport.Manly, Watsons Bay and Taronga all run on a normal fare — you do not need a harbour cruise.
  • One card covers everything.Trains, buses, ferries and light rail all take a contactless card or phone.
  • You do not need a car.Parking in the city is expensive and the traffic is slow.
  • The airport train runs into the city in about 15 minuteswhich is quicker than most taxis.

How many nights?

Three. One for the harbour and the city on foot, one for the Blue Mountains, and one spare for the beaches or whatever you liked best. If Sydney is the start of something longer, there is a fuller breakdown on our how many days do you need in Australia page.
