Is Margaret River right for families, solo travellers and older visitors?

Grown-upsThe day out is a wine day. There is a better family option nearby.

Best for older visitors and couples; less so for children. The Margaret River day from Perth is rated 1 out of 5 for effort and 4 for comfort: the gentlest trip we sell in Western Australia — but it is built around wine tastings, chocolate and a long lunch, which is a grown-ups' day. From $259. For families, the Pinnacles and wildlife day is the better pick at $265. For solo travellers, the 6 day camping loop at $1,299 goes further and is where you meet people.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

We sell two things in Margaret River, and they are at opposite ends of the scale — a very easy day and a fairly rough week. Which suits you is unusually clear-cut.

The two trips, side by side

TripLengthEffortComfortGroupFrom
1 Day Margaret River, Chocolate, Nougat, Wine and Coastal Tour1 day——6 to 48 guests$259
6 Day Margaret River & Esperance Tour6 days, 5 nights——6 to 20 guests$1299

Effort and comfort are each rated 1 to 5 on the trip's own page. One is effort 1 and comfort 4; the other is effort 3 and comfort 2.

If you are an older visitor

This is the trip for you, and it is the easiest we sell in the west. Effort 1 out of 5, comfort 4 — an air-conditioned minibus from Perth, a chocolate stop on the way south, a two course lunch with wine tastings, and the coast. Nothing demands a walk you would not choose to take.

If you are bringing children

Be honest that it is a wine day. The tastings, the lunch and the cellar doors are the point of it, and children will be bored. The better day out of Perth for a family is the Pinnacles with Caversham Wildlife Park: koalas, wombats, hand-feeding kangaroos, then sandboarding on the Lancelin dunes, from $265.

One thing to check: on that trip the 4WD section over the Lancelin dunes cannot be joined by children under four, pregnant women or anyone with back problems. The rest of the day is unaffected.

If you're travelling solo

  • Take the 6 day loop.Groups of 6 to 20, swag camping with amenities, and five dinners included — which is where people get to know each other.
  • It goes much further than Margaret Riverdown to Fitzgerald River, two nights at Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand, and Bremer Bay.
  • Comfort is rated 2 out of 5honestly. This is camping, not a wine tour.
  • It leaves Perth at 6amwith accommodation transfers included.

What it costs

$259 for the day, with lunch, wine tastings and the chocolate and nougat stops all included — so there is not much to add on top. $1,299 for six days, which covers five breakfasts, one lunch, five dinners, all the camping and the guide. That works out around $215 a day with most of your food.

How long to give the south-west

A day does Margaret River itself; six takes you right round the bottom corner to Esperance. There is a fuller breakdown on our Margaret River itinerary page and on Perth itinerary.
