Is K'gari (Fraser Island) good for families, solo travellers and older visitors?

All three, and the thing that decides it is the bed, not the age. Every K'gari trip is rated 1 to 5 for effort and comfort, and they run from a resort room at Kingfisher Bay to camping on the island to driving an automatic 4WD yourself in a convoy. Group sizes range from 4 to 43. The effort rating is 3 out of 5 across all of them — the walking is short, but the island is sand and the 4WD tracks are bumpy, which is the bit that matters for very young children and anyone with a bad back.

K'gari has a reputation as a young backpacker's island, and the camping trips are exactly that. But half of what we sell there is a resort room and a guide, and plenty of people book it in their sixties.

What the day is actually like

  • The driving is the physical part.There is no sealed road, so you are on sand tracks and on 75 Mile Beach. It is bumpy for hours at a time.
  • The walking is short.Lake McKenzie, the Maheno wreck and the Champagne Pools are all a few minutes from where the vehicle stops.
  • Eli Creek is the one everyone lovesyou float down a clear freshwater creek to the sea.
  • Swimming is in the lakes, never the ocean.The surf side has strong currents and sharks, which is why the Champagne Pools matter.

If you are bringing children

Take a guided trip with a bed. The 3 day trip that stays at Kingfisher Bay Resort and Eurong Beach Resort is rated 4 out of 5 for comfort — hotel rooms with ensuites, all meals included, and somebody else driving the sand. A day trip is the gentlest introduction if you are not sure how the bumping will go down.

If you are travelling solo

  • The camping trips are where people meet people.Shared cooking, shared tents and a shared vehicle for three days does more than a week in a hostel.

Do you need a 4WD?
