When is the best time to visit the Grampians?

SpringSeptember to November. Autumn is the close second.

Spring — September to November. That is when the wildflowers are out (the Grampians have one of the richest displays in Victoria), the waterfalls are running after the winter rain, and the walking weather is right. Autumn, March to May, is the close second — stable, dry and quiet. Summer is hot and carries fire risk, which is the real consideration here rather than comfort: the park has closed in extreme conditions. From $475 for two days including the Great Ocean Road.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The Grampians — Gariwerd — are a sandstone range inland from the Great Ocean Road, and they are the reason a two or three day coast trip is worth more than a day trip. The season matters here more than it does on the coast.

Season by season

SeasonWhat it gives youVerdict
Spring (Sep–Nov)Wildflowers, waterfalls running hard after winter, mild walking weather, everything green. The best. This is the month to aim for
Autumn (Mar–May)Stable, dry, quiet. Good walking, the light is lovely, the crowds have gone.Close second, and the easier one to book
Summer (Dec–Feb)Hot and dry. Waterfalls reduce to a trickle or stop. Fire risk is the real factor.Workable, but check conditions
Winter (Jun–Aug)Cold, wet, often misty. The falls are at their fullest and nobody is there.Atmospheric if you do not mind the cold

The fire risk point

Worth saying plainly because it is not a comfort question. The Grampians sit in fire country and the park has closed on days of extreme fire danger. If you are travelling in summer, that is a real possibility rather than a theoretical one, and it is one more argument for spring or autumn. Trips reroute when it happens.

What you actually see

  • The Balconies and Reed Lookoutthe view out over the Victoria Valley, and a short flat walk.
  • MacKenzie Fallsthe biggest waterfall in the park, down a steep staircase. Best in spring.
  • The Pinnacleabove Halls Gap, which is the walk most people do.
  • Rock art.Gariwerd holds the largest concentration of Aboriginal rock art in southern Australia, with several shelters open to visitors.
  • Kangaroos and emusaround Halls Gap at dawn and dusk, reliably.

Coast and Grampians together

This is the pairing worth knowing about. Two days gives you the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians from $475, three does both properly. The two are an hour or so apart and completely unalike — limestone stacks and ocean one day, sandstone ranges and rock art the next. If you were only going to do the coast, the third day adding the Grampians is the better upgrade than a third day of coast — see our are two days enough page.
