How do you get to Katherine Gorge from Darwin?

320km southDoable in a day from Darwin, but it is a 780km one.

Katherine is 320km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway, so a day trip is a 780km round trip — about $339, leaving early and back late, with a two hour boat cruise below 70 metre cliffs in the middle of it. It is a long day in a seat for two hours on the water. Most people take it as part of a longer Top End trip instead, where the gorge sits alongside Kakadu and Litchfield over five days from $1,749.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Katherine Gorge — Nitmiluk — is thirteen gorges carved through sandstone, and it is the one stop in the Top End people most often underestimate the distance to.

The practical bits

  • It is 320km south of Darwinon the Stuart Highway, sealed the whole way. A normal hire car will do it.
  • The day trip is around 780km all upwhich is the number worth sitting with before you book it.
  • The gorge itself is visited by boata two hour cruise below cliffs up to 70 metres, or by canoe if you have longer.
  • Edith Falls is on the way60km north of Katherine, and worth the detour if you are driving yourself.
  • It is Jawoyn landmanaged jointly with the national park.

The day trip from Darwin

1 Day Katherine Gorge Tours——Up to 29$339

Darwin accommodation transfers are included. No meals — you buy breakfast and lunch at Adelaide River, Pine Creek or the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre.

Effort is rated 2 out of 5, so the day asks very little of you physically. What it asks for is patience: it is a long way there and a long way back for two hours on the water.

Taking it as part of a longer trip

This is what most people end up doing, and it is the better answer. Katherine sits naturally between Kakadu and Litchfield, so a five day Top End loop covers all three without doubling back, and the long drive stops being a day of its own.

When to go

The dry season, roughly May to October. The gorge cruises run year round but the wet season brings high water and the upper gorges close to boats. The dry is also when the swimming is reliable at Edith Falls.

Where this comes from. What each trip includes, the effort rating, group sizes, distances and prices are that trip's own details as held on its page here, and prices update on their own. Distances are road distances on the Stuart Highway. Nitmiluk's joint management with the Jawoyn people is the park's published arrangement.
