Freycinet National Park in one day — an itinerary
It fitsThe lookout is 45 minutes up. The rest of the day is yours.
One day is enough, and the walk is shorter than people expect. The Wineglass Bay lookout is a 45 minute uphill walk on a formed track — one of Tasmania's Great Short Walks — and that is the view everybody comes for. Down to the sand and back adds about two hours. With the lookout done by late morning you still have Cape Tourville, Honeymoon Bay and the Freycinet Marine Farm for oysters. A day trip from Hobart is $159; it is about two and a half hours each way.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
Freycinet is small enough to do properly in a day and far enough from Hobart that the driving is half of it. Here is how the hours actually fall.
The day, hour by hour
| When | What | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Leave Hobart. The drive north goes through Orford and Swansea, both worth the stop they get. | About 2.5 hours |
| Late morning | The Wineglass Bay lookout. Up from the Walk Register car park, stepped and formed the whole way. | 45 minutes up, 30 down |
| Optional | Carry on down to the beach itself. Steep coming back up. | Adds about 2 hours |
| Lunch | Freycinet Marine Farm for oysters and mussels, or Devil's Corner for wine and the view over the Hazards. | An hour |
| Afternoon | Cape Tourville — a flat 20 minute boardwalk loop with the best coastal view in the park, and no climb. | 30 minutes |
| Afternoon | Honeymoon Bay and Sleepy Bay — small granite coves, five minutes from the road. | 30 minutes |
| Evening | Back to Hobart, or on to Bicheno if you are staying. | About 2.5 hours |
Walk times are Tasmania Parks and Wildlife's published track notes.
If you only do one thing
- The Wineglass Bay lookout. It is the photograph, it is 45 minutes, and it is why the park is on every list.
- If the climb is not for you, go to Cape Tourville instead.A flat boardwalk loop, 20 minutes, and arguably the better view of the Hazards and the coast.
- Skip the beach descent if you are on a day trip. Two extra hours is the difference between a relaxed day and a rushed one.
- The full circuitto Hazards Beach and back is around 11km and takes most of the day on its own.
Doing it as a day trip
| Trip | Starts and finishes | Effort | Group | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Wineglass Bay Tour | Hobart / Hobart | — | Small group, max 20 | $159 |
| 1 Day Launceston to Hobart | Launceston / Hobart | — | Small group, up to 20 | $209 |
The Hobart day returns to Hobart. The Launceston to Hobart day takes in Freycinet on the way between the two cities, which is the clever option if you are moving anyway.
Driving yourself
- It is about 2.5 hours from Hobartand a similar time from Launceston, on sealed road.
- A national park pass is required.Day passes are sold at the visitor centre.
- Start early. The Walk Register car park fills in summer and there is no overflow.
- There is no fuel inside the park.Coles Bay is the last stop.
- Take water. There is none on the lookout track.
Staying a night instead
Coles Bay and Bicheno both sit at the park's edge, and a night there turns the drive into two halves. The 5 day Tasmania loop includes a night at Bicheno, and the 10 day version gives the east coast proper time.
