Should you drive the east coast or take a trip?

Take the tripUnless you want to stop where nobody else does.

Take the trip, unless stopping where nobody else does is the point of your holiday. Sydney to Cairns is about 2,400km, and a hire car carries three costs people forget: fuel over that distance, a one-way drop fee that can exceed the hire itself, and a night's accommodation every night you're not on an overnight bus. The car also cannot go to the places you came for. K'gari has no sealed roads, the reef and the Whitsundays are boats, and the three big days need booking whether you drive or not. From $1,449 for seven days.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

A road trip up the east coast sounds like freedom, and for some people it is exactly that. For most it turns out to be a lot of highway and three separate bookings they still had to make. Here's the arithmetic.

What the car costs

  • The one-way drop fee.Picking up in Sydney and leaving it in Cairns is the line that catches people. It is often more than the hire.
  • Fuel over 2,400km.Sydney to Cairns is roughly London to Moscow. That is a real number before you have slept anywhere.
  • A bed every night. The packaged trips put two nights on overnight buses, which covers a long leg and saves two nights' accommodation. Driving, you pay for both.
  • Insurance excess on unsealed roads. Most standard agreements exclude them, which rules out several of the stops.
  • Parking in the townswhich in Byron and Airlie in summer is its own problem.

Where the car cannot take you

The stopWhy the car is no use
K'gari (Fraser Island)No sealed roads at all. You drive on sand and on the beach, and hire agreements exclude it. You need a 4WD trip or a tag-along convoy either way
The Great Barrier ReefA boat, an hour and a half offshore
The WhitsundaysA boat, and you sleep on it
Magnetic IslandA ferry, and the island has its own hire
The three you came forAll three need booking whether you drove or not, and in summer they sell out

What the trip does instead

The bus passes between towns are booked before you leave home, the nights are arranged, and the three big days are reserved. You still travel on your own between towns and have your own time in each one. What has been taken off you is the booking, not the freedom.

When driving is the right call

  • You want to stop where the buses do not.The inland route up through the national parks, the small towns off the highway, a beach you saw a sign for.
  • You are travelling as a couple or a familyand the per-person maths changes.
  • You have five weeks or more.At that length the flexibility starts to pay.
  • You are going west, not north.Western Australia is the opposite case: long empty distances, cheap campsites and far fewer services. A campervan there makes sense in a way it doesn't here.

The middle option

Plenty of people drive one leg and take a trip for the rest. Brisbane to Cairns on a packaged run covers the three bookings that matter, and Sydney to Brisbane is an easy self-drive with the coast road and Byron on the way. If that's the shape you want, tell us the legs and we will price it.

If you are comparing the bus pass on its own

That's the third option and it has its own page: Greyhound bus pass, campervan or a packaged trip, which covers what a Whimit pass is and when buying one separately makes sense.

Where this comes from. How you travel on each trip, what is booked for you and the prices are that trip's own details as held on its page here, and prices update on their own. Distances are road distances. Hire car exclusions on unsealed roads are standard agreement terms; check yours.
