Greyhound bus pass, campervan or a packaged trip — which for the east coast?
BundledThe pass is already inside the trip, booked before you travel.
There is a third option and most people do not know it exists: the bus pass is already inside the trip. On every east coast run we sell, the bus passes between towns are booked for you before you travel: you're not standing at a counter in Airlie Beach trying to get a seat north. A Greyhound pass on its own gives you flexibility and leaves the planning to you. A campervan looks cheap until fuel, campsite fees and the one-way drop fee go on. From $1,449 for seven days with the passes, the nights and the big days all in.

This is one of the most-asked questions about the east coast and it is usually framed as two options. There are three, and the one people miss is the one most of them end up wanting.
The three ways up the coast
| What it is | Suits | |
|---|---|---|
| A bus pass on its own | You buy the pass, then book every hostel and every day tour yourself as you go. Hop-on hop-off along a fixed route. | Total flexibility, long trips, and people who like arranging things |
| A campervan | Your own vehicle, your own schedule, sleeping in it. Very good in Western Australia; busier and more expensive on the east coast. | Couples, people who want to stop where nobody else is |
| A packaged trip | The bus passes, the nights and the big day tours booked together before you leave home. You still travel independently between towns. | Most people: and the option they did not know was on the table |
What a Greyhound pass is
- Whimitis the time-based pass — unlimited travel on the network for a set number of days, going in any direction.
- There are also distance and route-based passeswhere you buy a corridor such as Sydney to Cairns and hop off where you like along it.
- You still book each individual seatusually online, and popular legs in peak season do fill.
- Overnight services run on the longer legswhich saves you a night's accommodation. That is a real saving, not a marketing line.
- Premier is the other operatoron parts of the east coast, usually cheaper with fewer services.
The campervan arithmetic
- The daily hire rate is only part of it.Fuel over 2,400km from Sydney to Cairns is a serious number on its own.
- One-way drop fees.Picking up in Sydney and leaving it in Cairns often costs more than the hire itself. This is the line that surprises people.
- Campsite feesevery night, and the good ones book out in summer.
- You cannot take it on K'gari. The island has no sealed roads and standard hire agreements exclude it — see our do you need a 4WD on K'gari page.
- It is the better call in Western Australiawhere the distances are long and the campsites are empty. The east coast is the opposite.

The day tours run their own transport — a 4WD on K'gari, and boats in the Whitsundays and on the reef. | 6 nights — two nights at Rainbow Beach, two nights at Airlie Beach, one night in Cairns, and one night on an overnight bus. | $1449 |
| 10 Day Brisbane to Cairns Highlights | 10 days, 9 nights | Bus passes between towns, booked for you before you travel. The day tours run their own transport — a 4WD on K'gari, and boats in the Whitsundays and on the reef. | 9 nights — hostels at Noosa, Airlie Beach and Cairns, two nights camping on K'gari, one night on the sailing boat, and one night on an overnight bus. | $1999 |

Read the transport column. The bus passes are booked before you travel, and the big days run their own transport — a 4WD on K'gari, boats in the Whitsundays and on the reef.
You are still travelling independently. You ride the buses on your own rather than with a guide, and you have your own time in each town. What has been taken off you is the booking — the seats, the beds and the three days that sell out.
Which we would pick
- Under three weeks: the packaged trip. The big days. K'gari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef — are the ones that fill up, and having them booked is worth more than the flexibility you give up.
- Three weeks or more: a pass, or a long packaged trip.At that length the flexibility starts to pay, and the 21 to 42 day runs exist for exactly this.
- Travelling as a couple and want to stop anywhere: campervan.Accept the drop fee.
- Western Australia rather than the east: campervanwithout much hesitation.
One thing worth knowing about overnight buses
They are built into the itineraries on purpose. A 14 day Sydney to Cairns run includes two nights on overnight buses, which covers a long leg and saves you two nights' accommodation. It is not comfortable and it is not a trick — it is how the route works, and it is why the prices are what they are.
