When is the best time to visit Coober Pedy?
April to OctoberAnd underground, any month at all.
April to October for the mildest days, and any month underground. Coober Pedy Airport averages 27°C in April, 18 to 21°C from June to August, and 29°C in October, and it barely rains: about 145mm in a whole year. Summer reaches 37°C in January, which is exactly why the town lives underground: the rock holds a steady, cool temperature all year, and your night there is spent underground. Both seven day trips between Adelaide and Uluru stop for the night, from $1,305.
Checked on 28 October 2026.
Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world, roughly halfway between Adelaide and Uluru, and more than half of it is underground. That makes it one of the few places in the outback where the month matters less than you would think: the rock holds a steady, cool temperature all year, and so does the room you sleep in.
