Which Arnhem Land trip should you pick?
A permit tripYou cannot drive in on your own — the land is privately held.
Any of them, because the real decision is already made for you. Arnhem Land is Aboriginal freehold land and you cannot drive in without a permit — so a trip is not the easy option, it is the only one. Two day trips run from Darwin and both include the permit, the park fees and entry into Arnhem Land: Injalak Hill from $345, rock art walked with a traditional Aboriginal guide, and Minkinj Valley from $305, visited with special permission and far quieter. Both leave Darwin at 5:15am and can be joined at Jabiru.

Arnhem Land is the part of the Top End most people have heard of and almost nobody visits, and the reason is simple: it is not a national park. It is Aboriginal freehold land, and access is by permission.
Why you cannot just drive in
- It is privately held Aboriginal landnot a park, so entry needs a permit issued by the Traditional Owners.
- The permit is included on these tripsalong with the park fees and the Arnhem Land entry fee — there is nothing to arrange yourself.
- The crossing is at Cahills Crossinga tidal causeway on the East Alligator River. It floods, and it is well known for crocodiles.
- You are guided by people from the communitywhich is the whole reason to go rather than a condition of going.
The two day trips, side by side
| Trip | What you see | Group | Effort | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Arnhem Land & Injalak Hill | — | Max 16 | — | $345 |
| 1 Day Arnhem Land & Mikinj Valley | — | Max 17 | — | $305 |
Both leave Darwin at 5:15am, pick up at Aurora Kakadu at 7:50am and Jabiru at 8:30am, and include a picnic lunch, the park fees and Arnhem Land entry.
Which of the two?
- Injalak Hillis the famous one — a climb up an escarpment to rock art galleries, walked with a traditional Aboriginal guide, with the art centre at Gunbalanya at the bottom. The paths are unformed and there are no handrails.
- Minkinj Valleyis the quieter one — unusual rock art beneath a towering escarpment, visited with special permission, and a smaller group.
- Both are rated 3 out of 5 for effort. It is uneven ground and a hot climb rather than a long walk.
- Groups cap at 16 and 17which is small for a full day out of Darwin.
Seeing it as part of a longer trip
Arnhem Land sits next door to Kakadu, so most people take it as a day inside a longer Top End trip rather than on its own. The 5 day Kakadu, Litchfield, Katherine and Arnhem Land run covers around 1,400km from Darwin with park fees and almost all meals included.

The dry season, roughly May to October. Cahills Crossing floods in the wet and the roads beyond it become impassable, so the Arnhem Land days do not run reliably outside those months. If your dates are in the wet, Kakadu itself is still open and the waterfalls are at their best.
Where this comes from. What each trip visits, the permits and fees it includes, group sizes, effort ratings, departure times and prices are that trip's own details as held on its page here, and prices update on their own. Arnhem Land's status as Aboriginal freehold land requiring a permit is the Northern Land Council's published position.
