Day 1: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
Welcome to Adelaide, or Tandanya in the language of the Kaurna people, the Traditional Owners of the land on which Adelaide now sits. Meet your fellow travellers and local leader at 8am, then hit the road to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island.
When you arrive, strap on your walking shoes for your first walk on the South Australian tracks. Then settle into your Kangaroo Island accommodation and join your group for a welcome dinner.
Day 2: Kangaroo Island — Snake Lagoon
After breakfast, drive to the wilderness trailhead. There's time at the Kangaroo Island National Park Visitors Centre to learn about the history and wilderness of the area before you take to the track.
This first section of the trail leads to Snake Lagoon, through forest and coastal vegetation. Look out for kangaroos, echidnas and interesting plants. In the afternoon, settle into your new accommodation, your home for the next three nights.
Day 3: Kangaroo Island — Cape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks
Today follows the coast, along sea cliffs above deserted bays, with views across the Southern Ocean. Keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins below and seabirds above.
There's time to look around the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, built between 1906 and 1909, and get close to the local seal colony. From here, walk on to Weirs Cove, a bay surrounded by calcarenite cliffs.
The walk ends at Remarkable Rocks, granite boulders with bright orange lichen above the sea, carved by the sea and wind for the last 500 million years. After some time there, head back to your accommodation.
Day 4: Kangaroo Island — clifftops and mallee
The trip's second-last walk runs high above the sea cliffs, with a good chance of spotting dolphins and whales. After time on the clifftops on a rocky limestone path, head inland through tall mallee forests and low coastal heath.
The island's comeback after the late 2019 bushfires shows in the flowers and regrowth across much of the landscape, particularly the local orchids. Your guide will help point out echidnas and wallabies. Return to your accommodation for a final dinner with your group.
Day 5: Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
After a final breakfast, walk the last section to complete the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail. Then make your way back to Penneshaw for the early afternoon ferry to Adelaide, where the trip ends in the late afternoon.
