Itinerary
Please note that the first 4 days of this tour in the far north are shared with guests of all ages. The remaining 14 days are shared with travellers aged between 18 and 39 years old. This tour sometimes operates in a different direction; your final itinerary and direction are confirmed on booking. At times, weather and other conditions may affect or alter our route — your guide will keep you informed of any changes along the way.
Day 1: Auckland to Omapere
We leave Auckland behind and head north, easing into the adventure with a stop at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe to learn the story of New Zealand's mighty kauri trees and early pioneers. After a lunch stop in Dargaville, we cool off at the stunning Kai Iwi Lakes, crystal-clear freshwater surrounded by native forest, before venturing into the legendary Waipoua Forest, home to Tāne Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in the country. We finish the day on the west coast in Omapere, checking into beachfront accommodation with an included fish and chips dinner as the sun sets over the Tasman Sea.
Highlights:
- Kauri Museum, Matakohe
- Kai Iwi Lakes
- Tāne Mahuta in the Waipoua Forest
- Beachfront night in Omapere
Day 2: Omapere to Paihia
This morning is all about flexibility — if we didn't visit Waipoua yesterday, you'll explore the forest today. We then cross the Far North toward the east coast, stopping at a winery after lunch for a relaxed wine tasting before arriving in Paihia. With the rest of the day free, unwind by the waterfront, choose from a range of optional activities, or explore this vibrant Bay of Islands town at your own pace.

- Free day in the Bay of Islands
- Waitangi Treaty Grounds combo pass
- Traditional Hāngī dinner
Day 4: Paihia to Auckland
We journey south with a stop in the charming Matakana Village — free time to relax over lunch, browse boutique shops and galleries, or sample the region's renowned wines at The Vintry. Day 7: Punakaiki to Abel Tasman
We drive the wild West Coast with lighthouse views and seal colonies at Cape Foulwind, then head inland through Nelson Lakes to arguably New Zealand's most beautiful national park — Abel Tasman. Who travels with us
Is this tour for me?
Our tours are made up of small groups with a range of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Generally people who travel with us are between 20 and 49, though we also get alot passengers much older onboard - everyone is welcome! On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture. Our tours are for those wanting to really explore and share the experience with likeminded travellers. Whether we are camping by a billabong in Kakadu National Park or sharing a cabin in Tasmania, our travellers want more than just a site seeing tour. They are chasing a hands on group experience. The trips are packed with many highlights and the pace can be fast. There may be some long drives and passengers should expect to help out when setting up camp or cooking food - this is a group adventure. However, there’s always time to chill out, have a cold beer ( or wine! ) and soak up your surroundings. As always, if in doubt then contact us directly with your concerns.
Cost and Fees
What does Paid Locally mean?
Some tours require you to pay national park fees directly, in cash, to the tour guide on the morning of departure. Rest assured this will be subtracted from the tour price when reserving your tour.
Will I need additional money?
Visitors are advised to bring some cash as ATMs and banks can be few and far between depending on where we are during the trip. Its handy to have some extra cash as we do stop by local shops and cafe.
Do I need to tip our guide?
If you had an amazing time on tour and wish to tip the guide, then that is completely up to you. However, tipping is not customary and is not at all expected.
Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?
Our tour prices are completely transparent. There are no additional fees involved that are not included in the overall tour price shown. Reviews
Real reviews from travellers who've done this tour, one of the shorter trips it's built from, or the same trip in the opposite direction. Gathered from around the web and paraphrased — each review says which.
How we collect and publish reviews
Where they come from. Our reviews are gathered from independent review sites and from guests who share feedback with us directly after their trip. They come from people who have actually travelled on the tour. Some longer trips are made up of shorter tours we also sell, run back to back — where a review was written about one of those legs, the review says so.
Why some are edited. Many of our guests travel in their second or third language. Where a review is hard to read, we lightly edit spelling, grammar and punctuation, or paraphrase a sentence for clarity. We never change the rating, the meaning or the sentiment, and we never write a review on a guest's behalf.
Reading the originals. Reviews sourced from public review sites appear there in their original form, and can be read in full at their original source at any time.
