What should I pack?
Depending on where in Australia or New Zealand you decide to visit, your luggage will vary. For exact information please visit the "What to bring" section of each tour page.
What immunisations do I need?
For the latest information on immunisations, we strongly recommend you or contact the Travellers Medical and Vaccination Centre (www.traveldoctor.com.au) to discuss health requirements for your trip. They will advise you about appropriate inoculations.
Do I need to take any medical supplies?
It is not necessary to bring any medical supplies other than any personal items you may require. Each tour will carry an first aid box and our guides are all certified in First Aid.
How much luggage can I take?
We don't have an exact policy when it comes to luggage though we just ask our customers to be mindful that we have limited space. Generally we recommend people to bring a large backpack/suitcase with all their gear and another smaller backpack to keep on the bus and hold their daily items ( phone, water bottle, towel, sunscreen etc ) and which they used to take on walks etc. If you have a lot of luggage is best to leave the things you don't need at your hotel/hostel where they will store it for free.
Where can I store my luggage whilst on tour?
During the tour your main luggage will be stored in our trailer. This trailer is always locked however we cannot guarantee the complete safety of your gear from theft or damage. This is why it is so important to purchase a good travel insurance. If you need to store your luggage whilst away on tour, this can be done through your accommodation. Most hostel and hotels will store your luggage safely free of charge.
Will I be able to do any laundry whilst on tour?
For camping tours there will be no time to do laundry. However, for longer cross country tours involving hostel or hotel style accommodation you may have the opportunity to wash your clothes.
Do I need a sleeping bag?
For all camping tours require you to have a sleeping bag. If you don't have one they may be available for hire via the "join tour" button.
How fit do I need to be?
Our tours are made to be fun, informative and active and can be enjoyed by anyone with a moderate degree of fitness and agility. Travellers should be comfortable with hiking/walking up to 5km each day.
Do I need travel insurance?
Insurance is important in protecting visitors from loss or damange of goods, medical problems, cancelation by passengers or other casualties. Its highly recommended. Some tours on this website require you to have travel insurance. If you are Australian then it is not necessary.
Can I get online whilst travelling?
For tours incorporating hostel/hotel style accommodation you may have the opportunity to use wireless internet or use of nearby internet cafe. If you have a mobile plan with internet then that should be ok except for more remote regions. This will vary from tour to tour so please contact us directly for more accurate information.
Will I be able to use my mobile whilst on tour?
You can use your mobile while touring in Australia or New Zealand, but coverage may be limited in remote areas. For best connectivity, consider purchasing a local SIM card or an international roaming plan.

Booking the trip
Do I have to book this tour online?
Definitely not. Our website is designed to make is easy and convenient for you to schedule your tour. However we understand sometimes its nice to talk to someone directly. So by all means give us a call and we can organise your trip over the phone.
If I book more than one tour can I get a discount?
Absolutely! If you are booking multiple tours then we may be able to offer you a discount. Send us an email at info@lostinaustralia.org and let us know what you thinking of doing and we can put together a price for you.Also, be sure to look out for monthly specials on tours. We often have some great bargains.
How do I know when a tour is available?
You can check the departure dates of tours by using our calendar on the top right hand corner of the tour page. This will tell you what days the tour departs. For availability of seats please contact us directly at info@lostinaustralia.org or call us.
Can I just do a section of this tour and not the whole trip?
Unfortunately it is not possible to only do a part of the tour. Passengers generally need to stay with the tour from start to finish.However, drop off locations at the end of the tour made me negotiated.
Does the tour price include flights?
No. Tour prices do not include any travel arrangements other than for the duration of the tour itself. If you need assistance with booking flights or buses our travel team and certainly help - Just ask!
How far in advance do I need to book my tour?
As a rule of thumb we generally say AT LEAST 2 weeks prior to departure, this will usually get you a seat on the date you want. That being said, we cannot guarantee that spaces will be available at the time of your booking so, if you can, book as soon as possible. Bookings can still be made right up until the departure date of the tour if seats are available. If you know when you'd like to travel, please contact us and we will let you know if you need to book soon or if you have time.
If I make a deposit only, when will I need to pay the balance?
Balance on tours need to be paid at least 30 days prior to departure. Failure to do so could result is the cancellation of your seat with a fee charged. If you need more time to clear your balance then let us know ASAP and arrangements can be made.
Who travels with us
Is this tour for me?
Our tours are made up of small groups with a range of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Generally people who travel with us are between 20 and 49, though we also get alot passengers much older onboard - everyone is welcome! On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture. Our tours are for those wanting to really explore and share the experience with likeminded travellers. Whether we are camping by a billabong in Kakadu National Park or sharing a cabin in Tasmania, our travellers want more than just a site seeing tour. They are chasing a hands on group experience. The trips are packed with many highlights and the pace can be fast. There may be some long drives and passengers should expect to help out when setting up camp or cooking food - this is a group adventure. However, there’s always time to chill out, have a cold beer ( or wine! ) and soak up your surroundings. As always, if in doubt then contact us directly with your concerns.
Cost and Fees
What does "Paid Locally" mean?
Some tours require you to pay national park fees directly, in cash, to the tour guide on the morning of departure. Rest assured this will be subtracted from the tour price when reserving your tour.
Will I need additional money?
Visitors are advised to bring some cash as ATMs and banks can be few and far between depending on where we are during the trip. Its handy to have some extra cash as we do stop by local shops and cafe.
Do I need to tip our guide?
If you had an amazing time on tour and wish to tip the guide, then that is completely up to you. However, tipping is not customary and is not at all expected.
Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?
Our tour prices are completely transparent. There are no additional fees involved that are not included in the overall tour price shown. If you wish to do optional activities such as helicopter rides or wildlife safaris, then an extra cost may be needed. However, this will always be made clear at the time of your booking.
Whilst on tour
What will the food be like?
Our emphasis is on fresh food wherever possible and our meals are nutritious and varied on these tours. If you are vegetarian or gluten intolerant we can cater for you, but if you have very specific dietary needs you may need to provide your own food, please discuss this at time of booking. For breakfast we supply cereals, fruits, toast, tea and coffee. Lunch is usually a self-serve picnic sandwich and salads; in the evening we have a cooked dinner - This can vary between pastas, bbqs, rices and other hearty food to keep you energized! We always carry water in the vehicle and you will often have the chance to buy your own drinks, ice-creams etc at stops. Please refer to each individual tour/package to establish which meals are included.
Can you cater of special diets?
We can certain cater for most dietary needs. Please advise us at the time of your booking so arrangements can be made. For travellers with more extreme diets we may ask that you bring along additional snacks.
Can I book extra accommodation for the start and end of the tour?
We know our country inside and out and would be happy to give you good recommodations. Please contact us for recommendations.

JB, our very able guide, took us on a wonderful journey to the Maru animal sanctuary. We fed the Roos, and emus, saw the tassi devils among other Aussie critters.
We then drove to Phillip Island finding the fairy penguin burrows in the hillsides. The fairy chicks were coming out of their homes looking for their dinner and parents. As darkness arrived, the parents began their daily walk from the sea to feed the chicks. Hundreds of them marched by the platform as we watched in awe. JB told us exactly where to stand to get the best view of the penguins. So tiny. We were within two feet of them!
For all to remember, there is NO LIVE PHOTOGRAPHY THERE!!!
A flash from a camera will blind the penguins making them unable to search for food at sea, hide from predators above ground or at sea.
JB did a great job getting us back to our hotels on such a late nite.
You will be treated to a wonderful day visiting Phillip Island with JB as your terrific guide.

Great day trip. Got to see Koalas and their Joeys in a conservatory as well as some interesting birds and Wallabies. Penguin parade lives up to the hype as the little ones return from the Ocean to their nests. Wish premium seating upgrade was available and should have spent less time in the stands and more time watching them by the boardwalks and at their nests. Not allowed to take photos and videos of the parades though many ignored the rule :-(

We enjoyed everything about our day as was provided by the tour company and our driver, Ilkay! As others have mentioned, the only thing that detracted from the special, extraordinary experience, was other people not following rules, standing in front of others, pushing for seating, and taking photos of the penguins when repeatedly scolded. Sad that we are there to help the endangered wildlife and some people are more concerned with their instagram. Otherwise- certainly worth the extra $$ for the penguin Plus seats; others in our tour said they couldn’t see nearly as much in general seating. Highly recommend this tour from Melbourne!

This day trip was even better than I had hoped. Our guide, Craig (and stuffed platypus Barry, who made it really easy to identify the correct bus) was amazing. Craig was very responsive to the group, unfailingly pleasant and shared just the right amount of information about what we were going to see. I appreciated that we had time to wander on our own at each location. It was amazing seeing koalas up close at the Koala Reserve and Craig made sure we knew to look out for wallabies as well. The Nobbies was a beautiful spot and we spotted several young penguins in their burrows as well as enjoying the stunning views from the boardwalk. The highlight, of course, was the Penguin Parade, and the experience was even better than anticipated. Watching the penguins come out of the ocean was truly magical and observing them even closer from the boardwalks as they made their way up the “penguin highway” or lingered outside their burrows was incredible. I found the bus seats a little uncomfortable but this did not diminish the fantastic trip that this was.

A wonderful chance to get out of the city and see some of the wildlife. The tour is well run and went to schedule. Good job, Vicky, Great opportunity to see koalas in a natural environment at the koala conservation centre. Good choice of places to dine in Cowes followed by an amazing time on the beach watching the penguins come in for the night, would thoroughly recommend.

Fiona took us on an animal-sightseeing adventure I’ll never soon forget. Che is truly sunshine in human form and a wealth of knowledge.
The koala habitat was absolutely surprising. We were less than a meter away, witnessing the cuddly, little koalas nuzzle down in their naps, snack on eucalyptus and even climb about looking for their new perch.
As we drive across the islands to dinner and the parade, Fiona’s sharp eyes helped us located Wallabies all emerging for dinner, as the bounded across the grasslands.
Fiona’s true knowledge showed at the parade of penguins though, where she led us away from the crowds and into witnessing the waddling colony in their more intimate environments. It’s was like Fiona just knew where their dens were and we were able to see their wobbles and stretches in blue, before the changing of the guards.

This was a great fun tour well worth doing.
The koala conservation centre was great and we saw lots of Koalas.
The penguin parade was the highlight of the day and we were able to see the blue penguins in their burrows and see the returning penguins coming out of the sea and then waddling up the pathway . Such fun and the sounds of the penguins calling to each other to guide them back together was amazing.
Fiona our tour guide was excellent, very informative and friendly, giving so much great information and tips, both on the different parts of the tour and tips on where to go and things to do in Melbourne.
Comfortable bus, on time and above and beyond expectations.
We thoroughly recommend this trip and this company.

Great trip and saw so many koalas and beautiful views at Nobbies.
But the highlight was the wee Blue Penguins.. so special and worth the trip.
Fiona was a dream guide with lots of fab tips and knowledge, just a really beautiful person.. highly recommend.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE. Fiona was the best guide, highly recommend to anyone. Would do it again no doubt. Fiona gave so many tips to make the tour extra special, as well as local recommendations for dinner which were amazing. She gave advice at the penguin parade to maximize the viewing of the penguins which was golden advice. She even made the effort to go on back roads that other buses avoided which allowed us to see more of the wildlife up close. She was super passionate about her job and the island and it made the experience so much nicer. One of the top tours I’ve done in Australia. Don’t miss out on this tour and Fiona!!

Joe’s Bus is the best! Sis treated me to the Phillip’s Island tour for my birthday, and it was sweet! We saw koalas, wallabys, and so many brave little penguins emerging from the sea after sunset to reunite with their babies in their burrows. Lnew exactly where to go on the platform for the best views because Joe told us the best viewing spots! Super special experience, and one that I will remember! Joe is the best - good disposition, tons of knowledge downloaded to us over a few hours with just right humor, and he even charged up my iPhone between stops to make sure I had enough juice to record this fabulous day!

The penguin parade was amazing and is a must see so cute seeing them waddle from the ocean up to their burrows. Absolutely loved this tour. Fiona had great energy and was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with. She was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about conservation, and had great recommendations about food, viewing sights, how to best see the penguins, and other things to do in Melbourne. Her passion for Australia and its roots is exuded in the way she talks. This was one of the least expensive Phillips Island tours, but I wouldn’t change anything about the day and am so glad I didn’t spend more because this tour was perfect as is.

It was a great trip, we saw a lot and the pace was about right, would of liked a little more time at the Koala sanctuary (we had 55 minutes) as we would of walked around more of it and read the information boards but understood the need to keep on time to ensure we arrived timely for the Penguin Parade which was the highlight of the trip. Definitely glad we upgraded to Premium entry as was well worth it for the closer view of the penguins coming ashore.
Our driver Joe was great and kept us informed on what was happening throughout the trip with regard to timings and info. Fab trip, highly recommended.

Fiona is a great tour guide, she explained the trips meticulously. The trip was awesome and so much fun to watch the penguins slowly came up to the shore together in a cohort. The koalas are so cute and interesting to know they slept almost 20 hours per day.

Seeing the koalas in the Conservation Centre up so close was a real highlight. I also really enjoyed the penguin parade with the adorable little blue penguins at night. The itinerary was well-planned and we had enough time at each of the places. We got to see the sleeping koalas up close, and also the penguins. I booked my trip last minute and can say, I'm so glad I did. I called in advance and asked if there were any spots available. I lucked out and was informed one spot was available. The day trip took us first into the Koala conservation, and was delighted to see koalas, walabee, and exotic birds so close (the key is to be as still and quite). The penguin parade was absolutely spectacular. Not only did I get to see this creatures up close, but our evening matched up with great weather. Shout out to Fiona who was our knowledgeable guide for the day! Friendly and patient with the group.

We had a nice trip to Phillip Island to see the Koalas and Little Penguins. Our tour guide, Fiona, was one of the best parts of the day. She did a great job of managing expectations, sharing all the insider tips, and making sure each person had the best possible experience. I learned so much about Aussie eco topics, and appreciated Fiona’s obvious passion for conservation. The penguins were the most precious little things, and we stayed late to see and hear the colony settling into their burrows for the night. 10/10 will do it again if I ever come back to Australia.

The trip was amazing!! I really enjoyed the view from lunch at the town, the view from the Nobs, watching koalas in the wild and the Penguin Parade at dusk. Most of all, our tour guide Fiona made us feel very welcome, and her insider tips as well as her knowledge on wildlife were immensely useful in making full use of our time :) I would highly recommend this as a day itinerary as Phillip island is really beautiful, and having Fiona as our driver and guide was the best blessing! :) no regrets on spending a day outside Melbourne on this trip P.S: the tour runs really punctually too

It was amazing, just hope we had more time during lunch break to explore Philip Island (which could mean earlier departure). Fiona was amazing, she gave us tips on where to sit to watch the penguins and where's the wind direction.
We get to see hundreds of penguin, don't sit by the beach for long. Walk around and you can see them walking. We saw Koalas too although they were sleeping. Please wear comfortable warm clothing if you go during winter and waterproof jackets/raincoats - in case it rains.
For Muslims, there's halal kebab option if your tour stop at Cowes town. We arrived at Melbourne CBD at about 830pm.
Please dont take photos after sunset guys and follow the rules, it's for the penguin's safety else you mjght hurt their eyes.

This day trip was even better than I had hoped. Our guide, Craig (and stuffed platypus Barry, who made it really easy to identify the correct bus) was amazing. Craig was very responsive to the group, unfailingly pleasant and shared just the right amount of information about what we were going to see. I appreciated that we had time to wander on our own at each location. It was amazing seeing koalas up close at the Koala Reserve and Craig made sure we knew to look out for wallabies as well. The Nobbies was a beautiful spot and we spotted several young penguins in their burrows as well as enjoying the stunning views from the boardwalk. The highlight, of course, was the Penguin Parade, and the experience was even better than anticipated. Watching the penguins come out of the ocean was truly magical and observing them even closer from the boardwalks as they made their way up the “penguin highway” or lingered outside their burrows was incredible. I found the bus seats a little uncomfortable but this did not diminish the fantastic trip that this was.

She had an infectiously energetic and passionate attitude about Australia’s wildlife, in addition to a spectacular knowledge of the scenery, environment, history, and animal life. She had exceptional awareness of everyone in the group, always making sure everyone felt included and alerting us to amazing sites that we would have surely missed without her. This experience was 10x better than it would have been without her. We saw lots of Koalas close enough to touch and were privy to amazing views of hundreds of marching penguins. Eleven out of ten!

Fiona provided a fantastic tour of Phillip Island aboard a spanking new supremely comfortable tour bus with both safety and fun at the top of her mind, followed by very informative and interesting description of the culture and history of the region, including the natural history of flora and fauna among the islands, while expertly spotting many wallabies, the resplendent Cape Baron Goose tending to little ones, while winding along a stunningly beautiful rocky and severe coastline with smashing waves, not to mention the Koala Centre, the noisy sulfur crested cockatoo and calls of the kookaburra, and really an amazing exhibition and once in lifetime view of the parade of hundreds of penguins young and old, absolutely endearing, topping off a perfect day in Australia.

Fiona is super enthusiastic and informative and made sure to give everyone as much time as they needed to enjoy the experience — as well as share some helpful tips to get the most out of the day! And the bus has free WiFi! While trip lasted about 10 hours from start to finish and there are four key drop off points back in Melbourne for wherever you need to get back to that night. 10/10 would recommend for all anima lovers looking to see and learn more about Australian wildlife!

I just book the trip the day before, it's lucky that there are still spaces for us !!! We meet or guide Fiona and she is really nice and energetic she tell us lots of interesting things about Australia! The views are stunning the koala are cute and the penguin parade is amazing!!! It was windy and cold and the penguins didn't show until 8:15 our departure time was supposed to be 8:30. We were the last two to get back at 8:45 and he completely understood.

Fiona, our tour guide was amazing! She expressed a passion for Phillip Island and its conservation and enthusiasm when sharing her extensive information that was much appreciated and made the experience that much greater. She has insight and advice to enhance each experience, from lunch suggestions to where best to view the penguins. She even walked those that wanted around to make sure we had optimal viewing options. The pickup location and drop off was convenient, the bus was comfortable and the travel went quickly. Definitely recommend!

We took Fiona’s bus from Autopia tours. Fiona took us to the Koala sanctuary, Cowes, the southern tip pt of the island for great ocean photos and the Penguin parade. I booked this tour for my family and I and we had James as our guide for the trip. Overall we had an amazing time. He was fun and informative throughout the tour and he was helpful with suggestions. It was quite cold at night during the penguin viewing so packing a jacket will make the experience more enjoyable. James was also kind enough to drop each of the tour go-ers off as close to where they were staying as the tour ends quite late (around 10pm and takes 2 hours to get back into the city).

Especially seeing the koalas so close was very special. The viewpoint was also great.
Unfortunately, we were a little disappointed with the penguins as they were difficult to spot due to the distance.
Nevertheless, we had a nice day with our tour guide Vicky. She is very open, funny and friendly and has told us countless interesting facts about the island.

If you love nature, this is the tour for you! Fiona was an excellent tour guide! She has so much knowledge and enthusiasm for the flora and fauna of Phillip’s Island. She always seemed to know where to look for wildlife and we were able to get some amazing photos! Her tips on wear to sit to see the penguins was spot on! The day went by so quickly because she made everything so interesting! Dress in layers as it gets chilly when the sun goes down and it is always cooler and windy by the water.

Our tour guide Chris (Kiwi) is very attentive. He always put on a sign to remind us the assembled time. Also, during the penguin parade he raised up a flag so we can spot him easily. When we did the Penguin Parade she knew all the ins and outs. She knew what to do and where to go and when to go there to see the best view of the baby penguins in their burrows waiting for their mamas. She knew all the best spots. Joe make the trip very enjoyable! We had enough time to enjoy all the stops. Joe always make sure everyone was comfortable and happy in the trip.
The only bad thing is that we are not English speakers, in the booking we ask for Spanish audio that we didn’t receive.

Since it was Good Friday the tour company should have moved the pickup times earlier. Traffic was a crawl so arrived late to earlier stops. The dropped star for company.

Vicky was our bus driver and tour guide for the afternoon/evening. We traveled from Melbourne and stopped along the way to see the koalas, wallabies, and several birds. Then we drove to Cowes to eat dinner on our own. The highlight was a trip to Phillips Island to watch the little penguins waddle in from the ocean tonight feed their chicks. Vicky shared information with us about what to expect and did a super job getting us back to our hotels. It was a fun day!

Chris (Kiwi) was fabulous! Had so much interesting information about the history of Melbourne, animals of the region, etc. during the ride from Melbourne to Phillip Island. He was also very considerate about how late this excursion returns and making sure we all got back safely to where we were staying. The penguins were so fun to watch, especially the babies trying to get food from whomever they could, even if it wasn't their parent. Although the day started off warm, I highly recommend bringing warm clothing as the temperature gets quite cool in the evening. Bring long pants, long sleeve top, and maybe even a puffer jacket. fabulous activity. I highly recommended it!

Had a fabulous day with Fiona, seeing koalas, wallabies, little penguins and even an echidna! Fiona was super enthusiastic and informative throughout the day and you can tell she really enjoys what she does. She makes sure that everyone gets the best view possible and best experiences even if you dont have penguin plus tickets which is really nice.
Comfortable coach with lots of space and lots of options for the evening meal.
Only negative was being asked to wait to be collected from 13.45 outside my hostel and then not actually being collected until 14.30. This wasn't Fiona's fault but I would have appreciated communication from the office to let me know of the delay, it was disappointing having to call and email the office myself for them to let me know.

Fiona was a very good tour guide. She explained everything very clearly and gave some very useful tips. We have done three tours in Sydney and Melbourne and she was far better the best.

My wife and I are spending a month going around Australia and this is by far the best excursion we have been on.
Fiona the driver and guide was brilliant,she gave us lots of information and was so enthusiastic about Philip Island everyone on the bus was full of praise for her energy and support.
Super tour with the best guide we have encountered.

Joined the Penguin Plus tour yesterday, it’s the highlight of our family trip in Melbourne! Fiona is fantastic, taking care of everyone and advising us where we should sit to have the best view of the penguin parade. I really appreciated it!
In addition, when I booked the tour, I had to make amendments to the reservation, they were very helpful and promptly responded to the email! Highly recommend :)

We had a great day and our driver and guide, Fiona, was just brilliant. She provided some great background and information throughput the day. Fiona was just lovely and so enthusiastic. This is quite a small group tour which makes it even better. Cannot recommend this trip enough.

We had the most amazing guide called Fiona who was so knowledgeable but also incredibly enthusiastic which greatly added to our wonderful experience. The sights were amazing but so was Fiona who went above and beyond what we hoped for and even suggested other things to do during our Melbourne visit.

What an amazing experience! We took our two kids (5 & 3) and they absolutely loved every moment of it. Fiona our guide was knowledgeable and hands down made the experience fantastic with her warmth and humour. Tips: make sure to have warm clothes no matter what time of year and if you’re traveling with kids have them nap on the drive out.

The trip was superb. Long drive hassle free drive lovely scenery. Once at philllip island there were plenty of things tp see and do. The penguins were a highlight our guidefiona was very knowledgeable and smooth drover
