Day 1
Day 1 — Yamba to Lake Arragan Pick-up: Yamba 9:00am · Walk departs Angourie 9:30am Walking distance: 13km · 4–5 hours
The walk begins at Angourie, where guides meet the group for a full briefing before heading south along Angourie Beach. The first of many whale watching opportunities comes at Durrangan Lookout before the path continues to Shelley Beach, crossing vast sand dunes and springwater creeks along the way.
The afternoon arrival at the pristine Lake Arragan is one of the trip’s first big moments — the campsite sits in a beautiful setting beside the lake, perfectly set up and ready with afternoon tea waiting. After settling into your canvas tent accommodation, dinner is served around the campfire as the first camp night begins.
Note: Guests need to bring their own lunch for Day 1. Lunch can be purchased in Yamba before the morning pick-up.
Overnight: Lake Arragan, Yuraygir National Park
Day 2: Lake Arragan to Sandon River Walking distance: 13km · 4–5 hours
After breakfast with eastern grey kangaroos grazing around camp, guides pack a gourmet picnic lunch and the group heads north toward Red Cliff and beyond. Today’s walk takes in long, sweeping golden beaches and the protected paperback woodlands of the coastal hinterland.
The afternoon arrives at the Sandon River, where there is time to explore Plover Island — a place of deep cultural significance to the Yaegl people.
Bower Camp Co. will pick you up and return to camp at Lake Arragan.
Overnight: Lake Arragan, Yuraygir National Park
Day 3: Sandon River to Illaroo Walking distance: 11km · 3–4 hours
The day begins with the walk’s most memorable moment of transition: a river crossing by boat. From the far bank, the longest beach section of the trip stretches south along Sandon Beach toward Illaroo. Halfway through the day, the route leaves the shore and joins the back trail through coastal woodlands, where guides set up a shaded picnic lunch.
The afternoon walk into Illaroo Campground is easy and pleasant. The evening is spent around the campfire while the chefs prepare dinner.
Overnight: Illaroo, Yuraygir National Park
Day 4: Illaroo to Station Creek Walking distance: 18km · 5-6 hours
Today is the walk’s most visually varied day. Early risers are rewarded with a spectacular sunrise over the Pacific. The morning route meanders through paperbark woodland where emus are occasionally spotted, before exploring the coves, mangroves and marine life around Wilsons Head.
After a river crossing at Wooli we make our way across pebbly beaches to the most challenging section of the walk over rocky platforms towards Station Creek.
A short walk through the sand dunes takes us to our camp for the night.
Overnight: Station Creek, Yuraygir National Park
