Where do you stay to see the Whitsundays?
Airlie Beach, for almost everyone. It is the mainland town the boats leave from — every one of our 26 Whitsundays trips departs from Airlie, most of them from Coral Sea Marina. Hamilton Island is beautiful and has the airport, but it is an island resort you then have to get off again to go sailing. And on the two and three day trips you do not need a room at all — you sleep on the boat, at anchor in a different bay each night.

The Whitsundays are 74 islands, and the thing people get wrong is booking a room on one of them when what they wanted was to be out among all of them.
The short version

- Hamilton Islandhas the airport and the resorts. Lovely, and expensive, and still a ferry ride from where the boats go.
- Whitehaven Beach has no accommodation at all.It is national park. You visit it by boat, which is why it is on every sailing itinerary.
- Two nights on a boat means two nights you are not paying for a room.The 3 day trips include all meals as well.

The small boats carry 12 to 14 people and the big one up to 54. Both sleep on board; the difference is how lively the trip is.
Coming as part of a longer trip?
The Whitsundays sit in the middle of the east coast run, so the simplest answer to where you stay is often that it is already sorted. On a 7 day Brisbane to Cairns the sailing nights, the hostel nights and the bus between towns are all booked before you leave home.
