Is Tasmania good with family, and what should you book late?
VeryAlmost everything here is rated 2 out of 5 for effort.
It is the easiest state in Australia to travel with family. Distances are short, the day trips collect you from your accommodation, and almost every trip here is rated 2 out of 5 for effort and 3 or 4 for comfort. If you have booked late, the multi-day loops are the thing to secure first — the 2 and 3 day Best of Tasmania trips cap at 20 and the 5 day at 24. Day trips have far more flexibility, so if the loops are full you can still build the same week out of them. From $175 a day.

Tasmania is small, which is the whole reason it works with family. Nothing is more than a few hours from anything, so a day out does not cost you the day.
Why it is easy
- Short distances.Hobart to Launceston is about two and a half hours and that is end to end on the main road.
- Almost everything is rated 2 out of 5 for effort. The exceptions are Wineglass Bay, where the lookout is a 45 minute climb, and Port Arthur, which is a large site to walk.
- Every day trip picks you up from your accommodationso no car and no early station hunt.
- Groups are small20 to 24 on nearly everything.
- You can keep one base.Almost all of it works as day trips out of Hobart.
The wildlife days, which are the ones children remember
| Trip | What you get | Effort | Group | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Port Arthur & Tasmania Devil | — | — | Small group, up to 20 | $189 |
| 1 Day Maria Island Tour | — | — | Small group, up to 24 | $225 |
| 1 Day Bruny Island Tour | — | — | Small group, max 20 | $175 |
Tasmanian devils are genuinely hard to see otherwise. Maria Island has no cars and wombats that ignore people.
If you have booked late
- Secure the multi-day loops first. The 2 and 3 day Best of Tasmania trips cap at 20 and the 5 day loop at 24. They are the ones that fill.
- Day trips are far more flexibleand you can assemble the same week from them — Port Arthur, Bruny Island, Wineglass Bay and Cradle Mountain are each a day.
- March and April are a good windowthe heat has gone, the school holidays have not started, and the east coast is at its driest.
- Book the accommodation before the trips. In Tasmania it is the beds that run out first, not the seats.

Comfort 4 on the Best of Tasmania trips and the 5 day loop — these are motels and cabins with ensuites rather than camping.
What to leave out with young children
Wineglass Bay, if a 45 minute uphill walk is going to be a battle — the lookout is the entire point of that day. Cradle Mountain from Hobart is a long day at $260; from Launceston it is $169 and much shorter, which matters more with children than the money does. There is more on that on our Launceston page.
How long to give it
Five days covers it comfortably, seven without hurrying. The 5 day loop stays in motels and cabins with ensuite rooms and is rated comfort 4, which with family is the number that matters most.
