What is New Zealand's South Island like in winter?
At its most dramaticSnow on the peaks, clear night skies, and fewer people.
Cold, snowy on the peaks, and at its most dramatic. Winter runs June to August, and the South Island gets properly cold: this is not an Australian winter. In return you get snow on the Southern Alps, the clearest night skies of the year over the Mackenzie Basin, a Dark Sky Reserve, and towns and flights that are cheaper and emptier. Fiordland and the glaciers do not mind the cold. Plan for short days and the odd alpine road closed by snow. A day trip to Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo from Christchurch is from $259.

Anyone not skiing tends to write off New Zealand's winter. The South Island is where that is most wrong. The mountains are the reason to go, and between June and August they wear snow.
What it is like, place by place
- Mount Cook and Lake Tekapoarguably at their best in winter. Snow on the peaks, and the Mackenzie Basin is an International Dark Sky Reserve with its clearest skies in the cold months. The lake's colour does not change with the season.
- Fiordland and Milford SoundFiordland does not mind the cold, and a Milford Sound cruise is on four of the five longer trips below.
- Franz Josef and the glaciersthe same goes for the glaciers. Two of the trips below spend two nights at Franz Josef.
- Queenstownthe town most South Island trips end in or pass through, with three nights there on several of them.
- Christchurchwhere most trips start, and the departure point for the Mount Cook day trip.
What to plan for
- Real cold. This is not an Australian winter. Pack layers and a warm jacket.
- Short days.It gets dark early, so a day trip that leaves at dawn and is back after dark is normal.
- Snow occasionally closes alpine passeswhich can affect the Mount Cook road. It is cleared, but check the day before.
- Camping is for the experienced. Some alpine campsites close entirely in winter, so a trip with a roof each night is the easy way to see it.
- Cheaper and emptierincluding the flights in.
