When is the best time to visit Magnetic Island?

May to October, the dry season. Magnetic Island sits off Townsville, where days through those months average 25 to 30°C and September is the driest month at 10mm. It is warm enough for the beaches all year: even July averages 25°C by day. January to March is the warmest, greenest stretch, at 31 to 32°C, with most of the year's rain, peaking at 313mm in February. Whatever the month, wild koalas sit in the trees above the Forts Walk, best seen early or late in the day. Thirteen of our east coast trips include a night on the island and the ferry, from $2,699.

Magnetic Island sits eight kilometres off Townsville in the tropics, so it is warm every month of the year. The year splits into a dry season, roughly May to October, and a wet season, December to March. Both have their own island to offer.

What each season is for
The dry season. May to October
- Warm, sunny and dry25 to 30°C by day, and no month above 34mm of rain.
- September is the driest monthof the year at 10mm.
- The walking is easy. The Forts Walk and the tracks between the bays are at their most comfortable.
- Nights are mild, 14 to 21°C, so bring a light layer for the evenings.
The wet season. December to March
- The warmest months31 to 32°C by day with nights around 23 to 24°C.
- The island is at its greenest.February is the wettest month at 313mm, and the national park comes alive with it.
- Do the Forts Walk early in the morningwhen it is coolest and the koalas are about, and keep the afternoons for the bays.
What is good in every month
- Wild koalas on the Forts Walkabout 4km return, in the eucalypts above the path. They are easiest to see early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
- Rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay, which come down to the rocks at dusk.
- Snorkelling straight from the sand on the fringing reef at Geoffrey Bay and Nelly Bay.
- 23 bays and beaches, from busy Horseshoe Bay to quiet Florence and Arthur Bays.
So when would we go?
- September or Octoberif you can pick freely: warm, dry and the driest weeks of the year.
- June to Augustfor mild, sunny beach days while the south of Australia is in winter.
- Mayas the dry season starts and the island is green from the wet.
- December to Marchfor the warmest days and the greenest island. Walk early and keep the afternoons for the bays.
