Is Hobart a good base, and who do the day trips suit?

GentleTwelve day trips, almost all rated 1 or 2 out of 5 for effort.

It is the easiest base in Tasmania and it suits everyone. Twelve day trips leave Hobart, from $137, and every one of them picks you up from your accommodation and brings you back — so you need no car. All but one are rated 1 or 2 out of 5 for effort, which makes this the gentlest part of Australia we sell. The exceptions worth knowing: Wineglass Bay and Port Arthur are rated 3, because of a climb and a large site respectively.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Twenty of the twenty-five Tasmanian trips we sell start and finish in Hobart. It is a small city with a harbour, and everything worth seeing in the south is a day trip from it.

How many days to give Hobart

Three to four. One for the city, MONA and the waterfront, then Port Arthur, Bruny Island and — if you have a fourth — Wineglass Bay or Cradle Mountain. Note that Cradle Mountain from Hobart is $260 and a long day; it is $169 and much shorter from Launceston, which is worth knowing if you are flying into one and out of the other. See our Launceston page.
