When is the best time to visit Esperance and Lucky Bay?

Dec to MarchAnd for the kangaroos, early morning beats any month.

December to March. Esperance is mild rather than hot — 26°C at the warmest, 17°C in July — and the real variable is rain: 18mm in December against 97mm in July. Summer gives you the warmest water and the longest days for the beaches, which is the whole reason to come. For the kangaroos on Lucky Bay, the month matters far less than the hour — they come down to the sand in the early morning and late afternoon, year round.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Esperance sits on the bottom corner of Western Australia, and it has the whitest sand and clearest water in the country. It also has a proper winter, which is the bit people do not expect.

The kangaroos on Lucky Bay

  • They are there year round. This is not a seasonal thing, which is the most common misunderstanding about Lucky Bay.
  • Early morning and late afternoonare when they come down onto the sand. The middle of the day they are in the shade behind the dunes.
  • Do not feed them.It is a national park and the rangers are clear about it.
  • Lucky Bay is in Cape Le Grand National Parkabout 50km east of Esperance.

Why come at all

  • The sand genuinely is that white.Lucky Bay has been measured as among the whitest in Australia, and the contrast with the water is the reason the photographs look edited.
  • Cape Le Grandhas four more beaches as good and far emptier — Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove and Le Grand Beach among them.
  • The Great Ocean Drivewest of town is a 40km loop past Twilight Beach and the wind farm.
  • Whales pass between roughly June and Octoberwhich is some compensation for the winter weather.

Getting there

Esperance is a long way from anywhere — roughly 720km south-east of Perth, which is a full day's drive. Almost everyone reaches it as part of a longer trip rather than on its own.

If your dates are in winter

Go anyway, and bring a coat. The beaches are at their emptiest, the whales are offshore, and from September the wildflowers start — Western Australia's display is the largest of its kind anywhere. The water will be cold, but the sand is the same colour in July as it is in January.
